The Leader of Green Alliance, Russia is ready
to go bail for arrested Greenpeace activists
Russian billionaire Gleb Fetisov, the Leader of ‘Green Alliance – People’s Party’ has petitioned the Leninski District Court of Murmansk to vary the preventive measure for arrested activists on personal surety or bail.
On the 19th of September Russian Border Guard Special Forces stormed the ship ‘Arctic Sunrise’ for attempting to hold a protest against the oil production platform ‘Prirazlomnaya’ in the Barents Sea. September 24 the ship with a multinational crew of 30 people on board, including four Russians, was towed to the port of Murmansk.
On September 26 the Court of Murmansk arrested 22 of the 30 Greenpeace activists on board the vessel ‘Arctic Sunrise’. The suspects were detained on charges of piracy for two months as a preventive measure. Investigators have raised concerns that, if at large, and realizing the severity of the crime of which they are suspected, foreign citizens may leave Russia.
The Party Leader is ready to deposit the required amount of money as bail for the release of activists in their own custody or under the written pledge not to leave the country.
According to the Greens it is evident that the action of the ecologists who were arrested on September 18 by an attempt to enter the oil platform ‘Prirazlomnaya’ in Barents Sea protesting against oil extraction in the Arctic was initially not of a piracy nature. Footing in gas or oil platforms, plants or other hazardous undertakings is the routine practice for Greenpeace activists in expressing their protest and coming into public eye.
Never once in the past peaceful Greenpeace actions have escalated into violent or illegal takeover of undertakings, ships or other facilities by ecologists. In this context the party considers as barbaric and unacceptable not only the behavior of Russian law enforcement officials who used draconian measures in process of detaining of ecologists’ vessel but also further action of the prosecutor’s office which mandated the detention of activists into investigation cell.
Gleb Fetisov asks the District Court of Murmansk to vary the preventive measure for the detainees. He is ready to stand surely for the activists and go bail for the release of the detainees in their own custody or under the written pledge not to leave the country.
It remains to add that ‘Green Alliance’ delivered to Murmansk 30 outfits of winter clothing for the Greenpeace activists who became hostage to the fight for business interests of the gas monopolist.
“Greenpeace activists are not pirates, extremists, terrorists. It obvious that day by day the trial of ecologists reminds me of a mockery of justice” – Gleb Fetisov emphasizes. “In the situation when authorities distance themselves from the solution of such a serious ecological problem and oil companies have strong belief in their impunity ecologists deemed it possible to venture upon measure of last resort for sake of nature protection”.
